First performed in 1901, Mascagni’s comic opera tells the tale of a travelling commedia dell’arte troupe, their impresario, and the interaction between the players and the characters they play. This is Mascagni’s homage to Rossini and to the Italian opera buffa and commedia dell’arte traditions.
